Exhibiting a fashion sense
With rains abated, last week's SoWa First Friday Artwalk was far from a washout. It was positively bustling with people ambling among the Harrison Avenue galleries (sometimes with a dog or child in tow), sipping wine, eyeing art. None, though, was as packed as the Bernard Toale Gallery, where the opening reception for two new photography exhibits, Abelardo Morell's "Pictures in Pictures" and Naoki Honjo's "Small Planet," drew ardent admirers. - LINDA LABAN

Residence: New Hampshire. I'll leave it at that.
Profession: Collector.
Do you know the Lane Collection at the MFA?
Aha! How exciting. Do you travel a lot for it? Oh yes, all the time. West Coast, East Coast, and internationally.
Have you found any great new artists? There's a British artist, Jem Southam, I really like. His photographs show reclamation, either a place being reclaimed by nature or by people. He did a series after an artist friend of his died, where he photographed places where he had painted.
Who are you wearing? I haven't a clue.
That's a very vibrant jacket. It's quite psychedelic! It's not new. I've had it for years.
Do you think fashion is art? Yes, I do. But it depends on the person who's wearing it. You have to have that flare to express through what you wear.

Profession: Director of Axiom Gallery in Jamaica Plain.
What medium does Axiom usually show? New media. We tend to show a lot of new artists.
Who are you wearing? Juicy Couture, mainly.
Those have to be the best summer pants. Well thank you, but I really can't remember where I bought these. It was on the West Coast.
What do you do for fun? I like dancing. I usually go to the Phoenix Landing in Central Square. I like Galapagos in New York. I went to Diva Lounge in Davis Square last night. Very cool, great tea cocktails.
Favorite place to eat? Dolce Vita in the North End. There's a big Italian man who makes sure you are enjoying everything. I really like it that they serenade you too. I'm a violinist, so I enjoy having someone play to me.

Profession: Performance artist.
Where have you shown recently? I was at the Samson gallery last July and I have a collaboration at Gallery XIV in two weeks.
Is it difficult to find gallery space? Do you have to hustle? Yes, it's tough. I wouldn't call it a hustle. But you do have to be good at self-promotion.
What do you do for fun? This. I was at a preview at an art gallery last night. I don't have a lot of time for fun. I'm usually working. I do yoga, though.
Your tartan pants are very Kings Road [London], circa 1977, but without the straps. Exactly. But with a bit more flare to the leg. I got them out of a friend's bag of hand-me-downs. He said pick through and take what you want.
Isn't nosing through other people's junk the most fun way to shop? Yes, it's the best. I have found some of my favorite items that way.![]()
