Can art and design be friends? Discuss.
Beautiful art and gorgeous design don't always make for a harmonious union. But short of choosing art to match the couch (ugh), how can you make it all work together? At Arclinea's "Art in Design" luncheon last week, art and design professionals got together to consider the issue. While guests nibbled sandwiches, the presenters - Boston-based painter Christos Hamawi, Duffy Design Group principal Dennis Duffy, Susan Lanoue, owner of Lanoue Fine Art on Newbury Street, and Arclinea owner Philip Guarino - gave perspective and tips. "Normally I don't create art for any particular space," said Hamawi. "But the challenge of a commission with . . . restrictions can be inspiring." - LINDA LABAN

Who are you wearing? I got this at Lord & Taylor.
That simple black smock dress goes everywhere, right? Yes, it does. It's like something I had in the '60s. Only that one was orange.
You sound nostalgic. Were you a Swinging '60s girl? Yes, I was!
It must have been great, all the music, and parties. . .
We'll stop right there. But yes, it was.
What's your favorite thing to do? Newbury Street. I'm a shopper. I like to walk end to end and go into every single shop. It takes all day, but I love the Newbury Street experience. Newbury and Charles Street were the places to shop when I was a teenager and in my 20s.
People say it was much more interesting then, less generic stores. There were more artists and antique stores. What's taken over Newbury are the nail salons. It's ridiculous.

You live in two very exciting cities. People like me in LA because they think I live in a smart city. People like me in Boston because they think I live in a hip city.
What do you think of Boston's tag as "Hollywood East"? It's great. My business card is going to be in the new Bruce Willis movie. Someone I know put it in.
Sounds like a case of placement. Definitely. We love placement.
Have you seen "The Dark Knight" yet? Nah, I don't care for Batman.
Not even Frank Miller's version? No. He was never my kind of superhero.
Nice shirt, who are you wearing? Diesel shirt and handmade Levis. They are off-the-rack, but they're handmade instead of whatever they do normally. They feel like Levi's felt when I was a little boy.
What's your favorite summer thing to do in Boston? Hang out with my dogs on the pier near where I live.

You get to work around great designs all day. It must drive you mad with desire. Yes, I do. And it is tempting, but it's really interesting and inspiring.
Who designed that striking geometric top? Jess Meyer, she's in South Boston. It's called Myre Designs. Not sure why it's spells it differently to her name, but she's fabulous.
Where do you like to hang out? I like to try new things. I was at the Hungry Mother in Cambridge last night. Unbelievable French food done with a Southern style. I'm Italian so I always like to go out and eat good food.
What's your favorite thing to do in summer? Barbecues in the backyard. If I'm hanging out in the city, then it's drinks on a patio. I really like Rocca: Great drinks, and it's pretty.![]()
