Enjoying F.A.M.E. in a world of chic
August 14, 2008

Held the first Wednesday of the month at Via Matta, the event known as F.A.M.E. (Fashion, Art, Music, Enoteca) debuted a new, all-female art series called "Paint Pens in Purses" last week. Organizer Shayna Yasuhara (better known to some as painter and illustrator Shayna Shenanigans) brought together works by Nineta, Lichiban, Morgan Thomas, Heather McGrath, Illy L., and, of course, Shenanigans. There was unique couture, in the form of hand-painted shoes, from Kim Harris's Allston fashion emporium LAB. DJ Miss Thing supplied cool tunes, spinning a mix that included Cure pop and James Brown funk, while Via Matta served up blackberry sage gimlets, arancini, and pizza. Veteran scenester Peter Wolf stopped by, too. - LINDA LABAN

What is iZotope? We're a music tech company. We just launched a drum machine for the iPhone this week.
A drum machine for an iPhone? Yes. It's a spinoff from our iDrum for PC and Mac.
So, musicians work out killer beats on their phone? Exactly. You're getting an exclusive on this, it's just launching.
Where do you shop and who are you wearing? I buy a lot of things at LAB. I like to support them. I got this jacket there. The jeans are Quicksilver. Actually, I think I bought them in Vegas.
When you're not DJing and clubbing, where do you hang out? I like the Lizard Lounge for live music. I was there the other night and Peter Wolf got up and played with the band.

That's a cool T-shirt. My friend bought it for me in Vietnam. It's the Vietnamese flag.
Where do you normally shop? I like to buy things that have been worn before. Thrift stores mainly. This [gray hoodie] cost $4. I wear it all the time.
Seen any good movies lately? Yes, I watched "The Fearless Freaks" this morning.
The Flaming Lips documentary? Then I watched "The Funky Monks," which is the Red Hot Chili Peppers making "Blood Sugar Sex Magik."
You get up and crank out two movies before lunch? Yes.
What did you do for lunch? I went out and bought a baguette, some sausage, and tomatoes, and made a sandwich.

That's a striking outfit. I got this jacket today from Zara. They have great sales.
The wood and brass necklace really makes it. I bought it in a boutique in California. I really like shopping in small interesting boutiques.
So, skinny jeans: Are we over them yet? This is my only pair and I think by fall we'll be into the "boyfriend jeans."
You mean the baggier, more forgiving jean? Exactly. They're just so much more comfortable. The problem is they don't show off your shape.
Where do you like to hang out? We've been going to Nantasket Beach every weekend. It's so nice to get away from the city, but by Sunday I'm, like, get me back to the city!

Have you been here before? No, I came because my friend Illy has her work up.
Where do you hang out? I like to go to Latin clubs, dancing. Usually Venu or the Roxy.
Are you a shopper? Yes I am. I just came back from Orlando, Florida. We spent three days shopping. We were supposed to go to Disney and Universal Studios, but we didn't make it.
That's a bright summery T-shirt. I got this at Macy's. It's Ed Hardy. The jeans are by Seven.
Skinny jeans: still in? Absolutely, I love them. If it's what's in, I'll keep on wearing them.
Those are beautiful sandals. They're by Aldo.
Sandals don't mean a thing without a good pedicure. I always get pedicures. I love it.

What's a stencil artist, besides the obvious? It's an offshoot of graffiti art. There's a growing movement, even here in Boston, too.
Who are you wearing? I got this T-shirt online; it's the cover art to Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures."
Paired with the stripy scarf it's very vertigo-chic. The scarf's older. It's cold tonight, which I much prefer. I'm more of a winter person.
Where do you like to hang out? Chinatown. Bars like the Good Life. My favorite bar is the Tam.
Good drinks? Strong drinks. The bartender is really nice, accepting.

You're wearing the high-waisted jeans we were seeing creep into stores earlier this year. I got these for $20 at Rainbow in Downtown Crossing. That's one of those stores that no one goes into, but they really should. I saw a pair just like these, but they were $400. I was so annoyed. It was raining one day, I walked into Rainbow to get out of the rain, and there these were. It was like, yes!
Are you a shopper? Will you trawl through shops searching for stuff? Yes, I am. But I prefer thrift and vintage. The clothes have history, it's cool.
