Sizing up an eclectic crowd
- |
Locals gathered at Cambridge hipster hot spot Middlesex Lounge last week to celebrate the book launch of "Size Matters: The Hard Facts About Male Sexuality," co-written by Dr. Harry Fisch, professor of clinical urology at Columbia University, and Kara Baskin, editor of Lola magazine (a Boston Globe publication). The crowd included an eclectic mix of fellow writers, friends and family, and curious colleagues. Middlesex staff served up tasty treats like tiny tacos, shrimp shumai, and swiss sandwiches, while Baskin provided anatomically correct (more or less) sugar cookies as conversation-starting snacks. Per the author's request, Middlesex managers also created a mix of "sexy" music for the evening's festivities, including cuts by Al Green, Air, and Ladytron. - ERICA CORSANO

Have you been here before? No.
Have you read the book? I just got it. My boyfriend is the author's brother, so it's kind of awkward.
OK, let's change the subject. Great dress, very classic chic. Where did you get it? At Black and White Market. I love the vintage classic look, things that come from the '40s and '50s.
Do you watch "Mad Men"? No.
Any favorite TV shows? I don't really watch TV except for guilty pleasures like "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."
Any dinner plans after this? I'm hoping we can go get burritos later. I usually go to Anna's [Taqueria].

Fun look. Who are you wearing? Forever 21 vest, H&M dress,
Have you read the book? No, but it seems so fun, I'm excited to read it.
See any great DVDs this summer? "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer." It's beautiful and morbid and has beautiful cinematography.
Speaking of beautiful, your haircut is great. Who cuts your hair? Thank you! Jennifer [Eaton] at Salon Luna.
How would you describe your style? It's all about duality. I like to be edgy and then romantic, preppy and then punky . . . and always part rocker.

Who are you wearing? It's a mix. The vest is Elie Tahari, the dress is H&M, and the jeans are Express. My bag and bracelet are from Rebel designs.
You run an accessories boutique. Do you have any favorite accessories for fall? Cuffs.
Have you read the book? No, but I'm going to get my copy tonight, and we'd love to carry it in the store. It will be fun and definitely something to gossip about. I'll be surprised (unfortunately) by how much I already know. This book gives women a tool to talk about something that some normally wouldn't.
Do you come to the Middlesex Lounge regularly? I come infrequently. I like Tuesday nights, it's electro night.

Great tattoos, what are they? This one is a Peruvian tumi, I'm half Peruvian. The other one is of roses with my grandmother's name around it.
Where did you get them done? Art Freak in Providence
Great boots. Where are they from? The Garment District like 2 years ago.
How would you describe your style? I love vintage, I'll always wear vintage. I'd say it's girly '80s and classy vintage.
What kind of clothing are you designing? Romper one-pieces for adults. I'm working on a sporty line and a more classy line.
What's the line called? I'm working on a name and am aiming for a launch next summer.

Great glasses. Where are they from? They are Ray-Ban.
That's a good look for you. Where is it from? Wow. You think I'm stylish? I'm totally J. Crew preppy. I wear seersucker pants and madras. This shirt is J.Crew, the pants are from Banana Republic, the shoes are from Cole Haan, and look at my argyle socks - aren't they cool? I found them at Express.
As a man, are you intimidated by the topic of this book? No. There have been lots of books written for men about the female anatomy so it's time for women to have a book about the male anatomy.
What's the best song on your iPod right now? This might sound embarrassing, but I don't have an iPod. My favorite song right now is "American Girl."

Are the bracelets and rings your designs? Yes, it's all me, Amy Casher Designs. I have a studio in the South End.
And those boots are so interesting, where are they from? They are from this website called 6pm.com.
Have you read the book? I just bought it and am so excited to read it. Who doesn't want to know about this stuff?
Have you seen any good films this summer? I was obsessed with the French Film Festival at the MFA. . . . I love French films.
Any fun travel plans for the rest of the summer? I'm about to go to France and Spain to visit friends.
Correction: Because of reporting errors, a Style & Arts story yesterday about a book party held at the Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge misspelled the name of Amy Casher's business. It is Amy Casher Designs. The story also misstated her age; she is 34. Also, Casher will visit France and Spain, not Italy.![]()
