Getting dolled up for a holiday soiree? We asked some fashion experts for their advice on how to do it right.

"I am all for fashion with a sense of humor but I never met a holiday sweater I liked. Instead I suggest you go glamorous. Most people play it safe when they dress for the office and the holiday party is a chance for you to show off a little. So, maybe your dress is a bit shorter, your accessories bolder, or lipstick brighter. Costume jewelry is a quick, inexpensive way to amp up the glamour factor in any outfit. Just add bejeweled chandelier earrings, a chunky necklace, or cocktail ring - but not all three at once, please."

Mary Alice Stephenson, contributing fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar

"If I saw a homegirl walk into a party wearing a floor-length silk dress and a huge comfy sweater with snowflakes on it, I'd go gaga. I love a good holiday sweater."

Sam Mendoza, fashion designer

"I'm never one to think that you should gravitate toward the easy little black dress. I think the holidays are a great time to experiment with color and sparkle. It's a good time to be a little outrageous and wear a sequin or a bead. And definitely wear some color. I always like a little bit of an ironic moment. So if you're going to wear a wreath pin, wear 25 wreath pins."

Chris Benz, fashion designer

"I think a bright, solid sweater is always beautiful. It's versatile, and it's not just a holiday item. When in doubt, go with a great solid color. You can't go wrong with it. Stay simple. Holiday dressing can be too fussy sometimes."

Jason Wu, fashion designer
