Chic Bostonians rubbed elbows (and designer handbags) at the Liberty Hotel last Thursday at the posh fete known as Fashionably Late. There, designer Cynthia Rowley sent frocks down the runway to celebrate the opening of her Newbury Street boutique while Style Spy talked to guests (including Cynthias husband, Bill Powers) about fashion inspirations, Susan Boyle, and the American obsession with sweatpants.
Age: 23
Job: Receptionist, Mizu salon at the Mandarin Oriental
Have you had any cool visitors at work? They're shooting a movie with Adam Sandler and Chris Rock. They just came into the salon.
Tell me about Mizu's design. I always tell people, it's almost as if Stanley Kubrick made a set [of] the future, in 1978. It's really futuristic.
Are you a fan of Cynthia Rowley? I don't know her that well but I'm looking forward to seeing what she has to offer.
Did you know that this hotel used to be a jail? I did. I appreciate that they incorporated that in all the design, with the lights and everything.
Age: 35
Job: Works for State Street
What do you consider fashionable? Just people outside the spectrum of normal Boston attitude. Boston isn't really a center of fashion.
Do you think Bostonians are stylish? I just think they're boring.
Are you a fan of Susan Boyle? I know who she is but I don't really know what she's done. But I'm intrigued by anyone that finds what they're good at and does it. If you can find it and flaunt it, then do it.
Age: 21
Job: Student at Boston University and works at the new Cynthia Rowley store
How did you get the job at the new store? I just applied for it and my boss Laura, who's fabulous, hired me.
What's the worst job you ever had? I worked at a children's museum. Little kids pee everywhere.
Do you have a dream job? I think right now I really want to work in advertising.
Tell me about your hair. It's been bleached blond since I dyed it for a Halloween costume four years ago. I was Kelis for Halloween.
Age: 21
Job: Student at UMass-Dartmouth, works at Harvard
What's your fashion inspiration? I grew up in Europe. And I think it's my mom, because my mom likes dressing up.
Do you have a favorite fashion designer? Yes I do. I love Louis Vuitton [and] Marc Jacobs.
How is European fashion different from American fashion? European fashion is like expressing yourself. Americans love sweatpants. I go to school and everybody goes to class in, like, sweatpants.
Job: Writer, gallerist, husband of Cynthia Rowley
Who is your style icon? I think John DeLorean had cool style. He was kind of a business visionary, but I think he was known as much for having great taste.
Do you think Bostonians are fashionable? I've only been here for like three hours. I haven't been here in 18 years. I went to Fordham in New York but we used to come up here for Head of the Charles.
Where's your favorite place in New York? Probably the West Village, that's where I live. I also went to high school there. I'm like the loser that moved two blocks from where he grew up.
How did you meet Cynthia? I was the editor for a magazine called BlackBook, and I interviewed her for it, I think in 1997.
And you asked her out? No, actually we both went on to marry different people.![]()
