Greg Selkoe

Age: 34

Occupation: Owner and CEO of Boston streetwear company Karmaloop

You participated in a White House summit for young business leaders in March. What did you wear?

A Dolce & Gabbana suit and a Psycho Bunny tie. The suit was new. I wanted to wear sneakers but my wife made me change into shoes.

How has street wear evolved since the dawn of Karmaloop.com? It’s gone through multiple iterations since we started. First, there was this rave and electronic music influence and then it went to earth tones and corduroys. Then it was pseudo-preppy ’80s redux with Members Only and Le Tigre before it became influenced by Tokyo and loud colors. Now, we’re seeing streetwear brands emulating Gucci and Polo with button-down shirts and smoking jackets and shoes. It’s more upscale now, cleaner, with a nod to the early ’90s.

Any style icons? Kanye is definitely someone who has great style. I have such respect for him and how he’s melding high fashion and streetwear in an interesting way. Isabella Stewart Gardner and JFK - I admire their style and joie de vivre. Madonna is amazing. She’s a versatile dresser and so innovative.

It’s the weekend. We’ll find you. . .

. . . At one of our parties. Or at OMFG at the Good Life, Middlesex, the Enormous Room, or events at the House of Blues. But usually we’re just hanging out with friends. And we hang out in the office. Karmaloop is my extended family.

Which designers are you particularly excited about right now? WeSC out of Sweden is doing cool, innovative stuff. Comune is doing really well. And Society, out of Boston.

How many pairs of sneakers do you have? About 400-500 pairs, but I’m not a sneaker collector searching for rare Dunks or De La Soul Nikes. I cycle through my sneakers pretty quick. I’ve been wearing a lot of Alife and Supra lately.

What do you splurge on? I bought a few pieces from Marc Jacobs - he’s my favorite designer that we don’t carry. Everything else I wear, including my underwear, is from Karmaloop.

Is Boston a stylish city? I travel a lot; we’re doing better than other places but we still have a ways to go. I think we get most improved style in the world.
