What inspires you to photograph someone for your blog? What I’ll notice sometimes is a silhouette, or a color, or a scarf, a person’s hair. Sometimes, I can’t say what it is. It could be a person’s skirt. I’ll think, “Oh wow, this person looks really great.’’
What was the most memorable reaction you got when you asked someone if you could take his or her picture? First of all, I have to say that 99 percent of the time, people say yes [to being photographed]. People are really receptive and friendly, and that’s been really wonderful. One time in New York, I saw someone in a cafe who I wanted to take a picture of. He left and I ran after him. I had to run fast because he walked really fast. I said, “Excuse me.’’ He turns around and says, “Yes?’’ like he wasn’t surprised. I asked him if I could take his picture, and he just scoffed. But the funny thing was that when I started taking pictures, he started doing these poses like Zoolander.
How would you describe your own style? My style is ever-evolving. I’d say the people I’ve photographed have inspired me to be more daring. I like to be classic, if you think of Jackie O. or our current Mrs. O. At the same time, I like the funk. I like mixing patterns - mixing a leopard print with plaid. I’ll take the risk.
What’s the state of fashion in Harvard Square? I’m tickled by the state of fashion in Harvard Square because it’s so varied. You have the professor-ish types with the tweeds and the bowtie, and then you have the kids who hang out at The Pit with heavy make-up and fishnet stockings. Then you have the tourists. I took pictures today of these girls from Sweden. I love that about Harvard Square. I see people from all over the world, and I can sit back and let it all wash over me.
