25 Most Stylish Bostonians of 2009 -- Stacey Gabriel
Occupation: Co-director of genome sequencing and analysis at the Broad Institute
Do people sometimes give you a double take when you tell them that your profession is genome sequencing while you’re shopping for your Tory Burch or Burberry?
That happens, yes. I think people have a preconceived image of scientists. I’m happy to provide a counterbalance to that. On certain days, anyway. But I think it’s important for people to know that scientists can be interested in anything. Art or sports, just like any profession, you have outside interests. As it happens, clothing and accessories are one of mine.
Is Kendall Square a hotbed of stylish scientists that we just don’t know about? Who doesn’t know about it? [laughs] We all know about it. There are a lot of scientists in Kendall Square, and we all live in a big metropolitan city where we have a lot of options. So I would say that there is a lot of style in this area, particularly with scientists.
Tell me about your approach to style. This is a hard question for me. I don’t usually think about it. I love to go shopping, and I love to take a million things into a dressing room and just try them on. There are certain labels that I love. I’m a huge follower of Us magazine and InStyle, so I try to keep track of what’s out there. But I really like to go with what I like and what feels good on me.
So you’re both a science nerd and an accessory nerd. That’s the way I like to think about it.
Do you have any particular favorite stores? I do. This is going to sound a little boring, but one of the styles that I really love is this woman who is the creative director of J.Crew. Her name is Jenna Lyons. I think they have a good blend of things. I love Tory Burch, I’m a bit obsessed. And I love BCBG Max Azria. Those are my favorites.
How often are you out scouring the shops for these labels?
Are you going to quote me on this and get me in trouble?
Of course not. My fingers were crossed, by the way, when I said that. It is a hobby of mine. I do enjoy, at least a few times a month, spending some time in the stores. I take my daughter with me. She’s little, but she loves going into the dressing room with me to offer her opinions.
