F. JAVIER TORRES

AGE: 31

OCCUPATION: SENIOR PROGRAM OFFICER, ARTS AND CULTURE AT THE BOSTON FOUNDATION

RESIDENCE: JAMAICA PLAIN

>You were at Villa Victoria Center for the Arts for six years before coming to the Boston Foundation. What draws you to working in the arts? I always joke that I have no formal arts training, so I’m tone-deaf, I don’t know how to dance, and I don’t know how to draw. But I really have wonderful memories as a child of arts being very central in my life. I grew up in a town where we were the first Latino family to move in. It wasn’t necessarily easy at that time, and I always found myself rooted in the music and history and arts and culture that my parents surrounded us with.

>You have many tattoos. Do you have a favorite? I do. It goes from the back of my right elbow all the way down my side to my hip. It’s words in Spanish that when I was training for my half marathon last year were sort of my mantra of what I needed to keep in my mind and my life in order to be able to run 13.1 miles. They are “passion,” “balance,” “humility,” “perseverance,” “loyalty,” “honesty,” and “ganas,” that drive and desire, that chutzpah to keep going.
