The Steinway concert grand that the world-acclaimed pianist Van Cliburn grew up playing was sold last month at Christie’s in honor of his late mother, Rildia Bee O’Bryan Cliburn. An accomplished pianist in her own right, Mrs. Cliburn was her son’s only teacher from the time he was 3 until he was 17 and a student at The Juilliard School in New York. Proceeds from the sale of the 100-year-old piano, which brought $62,500, benefited Juilliard and the Moscow Conservatory, where Van Cliburn also studied.
