84th Academy Awards: Fashion hits, misses

There have been years — many of them — when the red carpet at the Academy Awards resembled a scene from ‘‘The Stepford Wives’’ (the 1975 version, definitely not the 2004 version). A parade of statuesque, cookie-cutter stars, all squeezed into what appear to be sequined sausage casings of approximately the same shade of fuchsia, or black, or whatever the color of the year happened to be, totter down the carpet, their shoes hidden by a ruffle of tulle, and pose on cue.
