A HAT THAT MAKES A STATEMENT
It has been a long while since hats were an essential part of a wardrobe, for men or women. Sure, Don Draper and the “Mad Men’’ crew wouldn’t dream of heading to the office without one, but that era began to fade post-JFK. By the time evening newscasts were dominated by antiwar and civil-rights protests, the fedora was about as hip as a hernia truss. But fashion, of course, is cyclical, and hats are back, not just for stars like Justin Timberlake and Johnny Depp, but for the rest of us. Locals have an array of hat hot spots to explore, among them Salmagundi in Jamaica Plain, Ben Sherman, Barneys, even Target (pictured, Xhilaration hat, $9.99). And with the weather about to cool, tweeds and plaids and felted looks will add that bit of warmth we’ll all need. Just remember to take your hat off when you go inside, gents.
