Rule makers, rule breakers
A memo from CBS warning attendees about showing too much skin (namely buttocks, genital region, and “female breasts”) caused some chuckles prior to Sunday’s Grammy Awards, but the real question was: Who would follow the rules? After all, more than any other award show, the Grammy event always has a toe over the line when it comes to fashion. Men had few rules to fret about, but not all of them made it work.
GRAMMY AWARDS 2013: FASHION HITS, MISSES
Rule makers, rule breakers
A memo from CBS warning attendees about showing too much skin (namely buttocks, genital region, and “female breasts”) caused some chuckles prior to Sunday’s Grammy Awards, but the real question was: Who would follow the rules? After all, more than any other award show, the Grammy event always has a toe over the line when it comes to fashion. Men had few rules to fret about, but not all of them made it work.
HIT: Justin Timberlake
If we had to pick the gold standard of the night, the award would undoubtedly go to Justin Timberlake. The “Suit & Tie” singer found a perfect union on the red carpet in a sensational black and white tuxedo, floppy bow tie, and loafers made for his upcoming album release by venerable Tom Ford. Only Justin can make a sleek dreamboat ’do and a healthy dose of branding feel slick, not smarmy.
HIT: Rihanna
The custom ruby red Azzedine Alaia gown that Rihanna wore could have been the perfect example of turning heads while abiding by the Grammy dress code — if it weren’t for the unfortunate red carpet lighting that exposed more skin than was likely intended.
HIT: Rihanna
Sheer genius? It’s a definite possibility.
MISS: Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez’s Anthony Vaccarello gown seemed to be having an identity crisis, exposing a dangerous expanse of her right thigh while sloppily shielding the rest. At some angles, she appeared to be wearing a one-shoulder leotard, and at others, a kaftan appropriate for a childbearing Beyonce.
MISS: Jennifer Lopez
Neither is a great look for Lopez, but paired with a messy top knot hairdo, it was just downright bad.
HIT: Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood walked in wearing a Roberto Cavalli gown and 381 carats’ worth of diamonds and walked out with the Grammy for best country solo performance for “Blown Away.”
HIT: Carrie Underwood
Big hair, big lashes, an event-appropriate gown. We’re sure CBS had no qualms with the golden girl’s wardrobe choices for the night.
MISS: Adele
Adele managed to leave her comfort zone of retro-inspired little black dresses. Unfortunately, she traveled to sad, scary place where unwanted upholstery finds new life.
MISS: Adele
The singer not only in an ill-fitting floral Valentino frock, but shoes to match.
Dishonorable mention: Beyonce
Beyonce’s black and white jumpsuit by British born designer Osman Yousefzada brought us back to the depressingly misguided days when Tina used to outfit the Destiny’s Child crew.
Dishonorable mention: Katy Perry
Katy Perry’s mint green Gucci gown did not get the network’s memo.
Dishonorable mention: Florence Welch
Florence Welch isn’t one for conventional fashion but this one (a custom Givenchy) actually made us snicker.
Honorable mention: Allison Williams
Lena Dunham may have gotten to go home with a Grammy winner (her beau, Jack Antonoff of the group fun. took home the award for song of the year) but her “Girls” co-star wins the battle of best —or at least, better—dressed. Allison Williams, who arrived with gal pal, Katy Perry, looked effortlessly chic in this Kaufman Franco embellished column gown.
Honorable mention:Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift falls into that same predictable category as Carrie Underwood: She looked good, but we could have predicted her dress in our sleep. A white Grecian-inspired J.Mendel gown with tasteful cutouts? Yawn—but, also, yay? Sure.
