Previous themes for the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art have zoned in on exhibits such as “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” in 2011 and “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” in 2012, leaving the fashion and Hollywood set with a broad canvas to work with when planning their looks. However, the 2013 theme of “Punk: Chaos to Couture” on May 6 zoned in on something very specific. When picking this year’s hits and misses we kept that in mind. The Met Ball has always been an outlet for celebs and fashion folks to live out their most outrageous sartorial fantasies, but would they dare to strap into iconic punk-inspired pieces for the occasion? Here are our favorite and least favorite looks of the night.

Met Gala 2013: Fashion hits, misses

Hit: Elizabeth Banks
Elizabeth Banks wore a spangly gold Atelier Versace dress and opted for the slicked back ’do of the night, like most of the rest of the fashion set. She wore Brian Atwood shoes and brought Brian Atwood, designer. Both solid decisions.
Hit: Gisele
Sure, Gisele Bundchen wasn’t wearing much. But we liked what she was wearing. (She wore Anthony Vacarello, if you’re wondering.)
Hit: Jessica Biel
We weren’t huge fans for the unimaginative all-black looks at the ball this year, but Biel, who wore Giambattista Valli, was a pleasant exception. She found a good balance between a black tie formal affair and a fair amount of era-appropriate edge that was both flattering and fashionable.
Plus, we had to give the Biel bonus props for her faux (we think) septum piercing.
Hit: Jennifer Morrison
Jennifer Morrison’s Donna Karan Atelier gown was pretty cool — almost Morticia Addamsesque — but her hair was the real star of this look. A wispy braided mohawk? Punky and pretty. We love it.
Hit: Sarah Jessica Parker
Leave it to Sarah Jessica Parker to be the grand dame of the Met Ball. She arrived perfectly on-theme in a splatter-paint Giles Deacon gown with thigh-high plaid velvet Christian Louboutin boots and a Philip Treacy hat.
Hit: Miley Cyrus
In any other context — in any other universe — Miley’s Marc Jacobs fishnet maxi dress (yes, it pains us to even type that) would never make a hit list. But in true spirit of the evening’s theme, we have to say, she was right on the money.
Hit: Cara Delevingne
Model du jour Cara Delevingne wore custom Burberry with more spiky silver studs than we could count.
Hit: Ginnifer Goodwin
When we heard new prep icon Tory Burch was dressing Ginnifer Goodwin for the event, we were kind of curious. The dress is surprisingly on par with the theme of the night and even reminds us of those duct tape prom dresses once embraced by crafty high schoolers acros the country. A little glam, a little grunge, the look shouldn’t feel punk but it almost does.
Plus, her eye makeup was pretty amazing.
Hit: Anne Hathaway
We wouldn’t have predicted it but Anne Hathaway got completely into the theme of the ball. She dyed her hair blonde, channeled Debbie Harry, and opted for a sheer panel vintage Valentino that was absolutely perfect for the night.
Miss: Nicole Richie
But not everyone who opted to add shock value to their strands was rewarded. See: Nicole Richie, who wore custom Topshop and Jack Frost’s wig.
Miss: Kate Upton
Kate Upton apparently didn’t get the memo.
Miss: Gwyneth Paltrow
Neither did Gwen.
Miss: Nicki Minaj
And Nicki Minaj was just a disappointment.
Miss: Katy Perry
Katy Perry looked like she just popped off the back of a gilded edge pack of tarot cards. In other words: she looked GREAT. She wore one of those Dolce & Gabbana rhinestone crowns we all secretly coveted from the fall 2013 collection and arrived on the arms of the designers themselves. We couldn’t imagine a more royal entrance for the reigning queen of dressing in theme. Was it the theme of the night? Not so much. And for Perry (and Dolce & Gabbana), this felt like a missed opportunity.
Miss: Heidi Klum
Heidi Klum decided to say “forget you, punk,” and opted a completely random white gown by Marchesa.
Miss: Katie Holmes
Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa dressed Katie Holmes in this all-white number with a train that sadly resembled shredded toilet paper — but maybe that was the point?
