So -- the sock bun. We still don't get it. But we want to, we really do. We'll be investigating this thrifty hair phenomenon soon but for now, we asked stylist Elle Proulx of Mario Russo (9 Newbury St., 617-424-6676) for an easy big bun tutorial that doesn't require butchering a pair of socks. This look is perfect for summer weddings, graduations, or just as a fun alternative to the typical everyday ponytail. And trust us, it's easier than you think.-- Anna Marden, Boston.com correspondent.

1. Spray a thickening product throughout the entire head and pull hair into a high ponytail on the very top of the head. Tie with a dark or clear elastic.
2. Take a small, finger-sized section of the ponytail and backcomb/ tease to create lots of volume. Continue to do this in small sections, working your way through the entire ponytail.
3. Take the “volumized” ponytail and loosely wrap it around the elastic. Secure on all sides with hair pins and spray entire head with hair spray.
