Montreal smoked meat is spicy and salty, a cross between pastrami and corned beef, but with less fat; it's a cornerstone of that city's Jewish delicatessens. It may soon win over local deli lovers. After trying for more than two years, Walnut Market owner Moe Khalaj was finally able to convince Lesters Delicatessen of Montreal to allow him to sell its famous meat. Packaged in single-serving pouches ($6), which are perfect for two good-size sandwiches; and an 8-pound party size ($80) that serves 25 to 30, the meat is available both fresh and frozen. Single servings come already sliced. To serve, put a pouch of fresh meat in a bowl of boiling water for three minutes (frozen for six minutes). Then slide it between two slices of rye bread. For a real treat, try it on a St-Viateur Montreal bagel, believed by many to be the city's best, also available at Walnut Market ($6 for a half dozen).
