The 1 thing you must do, see or hear this week
THE 1 STYLISH DRINK OF WATER
Frankly, I don't have time to worry whether my portable plastic water bottle could contain bisphenol A. I'm pretty busy writing, socializing, and being generally fabulous. Let's skip the consternation and snag an aluminum bottle instead, shall we? I love Shinzi Katoh's adorable apple option. Katoh is a Japanese artist who specializes in zakka: "the things that make people feel happy and exist like a comfortable air," according to his website. His twee designs certainly make me giddy and keep me health conscious in style. Get your own at mollaspace.com. - COURTNEY HOLLANDS
THE 1 FUTURE-FORWARD MUSIC VIDEO
Hie thee to YouTube and check out the video for "House of Cards," the slow jam from Radiohead"s "In Rainbows." According to sources more knowledgeable than yours truly, the images were created using 3-D plotting technologies that collect information about the shapes and relative distances of objects, and the video was made entirely with visualizations of that data. In other words, it's modern, mysterious, cerebral, and beautiful. Totally Radiohead. - JOAN ANDERMAN
THE 1 OLD-SCHOOL DISH
Sure, I could log on to perezhilton.com or pick up Christopher Ciccone's new memoir that slams his sis, Madonna. But they wouldn't have the outrageous gossip of "Hollywood Babylon! It's Back." The new book talks some seriously X-rated trash about your grandma's favorite movie stars - did Bette Davis really murder her second husband? - and it's the best waste of 15 minutes you'll have in a bookstore all year. - JAMES REED
THE 1 SITE FOR TIME-WASTING FOODIES
TasteSpotting (tastespotting.com) is pure food porn, which is fortunately a more office-friendly form of procrastination than those other kinds of porn. The addictive website features beautiful, funny, or just plain drool-inducing images from all over cyberspace, submitted by fellow users. Click on one and it leads you to its original location. The foodosphere was bereft when the site was taken down, but now a new version has launched, as have similar sites such as foodgawker.com. There's plenty of eye candy to go around. - DEVRA FIRST
THE 1 BORN-AGAIN BROADWAY BABY
Sally Quinn, queen of Washington, has her eyes on heaven. She and Newsweek's Jon Meacham run a blog, On Faith, for washingtonpost.com. Here's how she describes her own religious quest: "Years ago I went to the opening of 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying' on Broadway. There was a moment when the star, Robert Morse, sang to himself in the mirror, 'You have the cool clear eyes of a seeker of wisdom and truth.' That sounds good to me." Say it soft, and it's almost like praying. - MARK FEENEY
THE 1 RETRO SUMMER PARTY SOUNDTRACK
I was convinced that Marina Records would quickly run out of material for its kitschy series of Woodstock-era German pop compilations. But these Germans just keep getting groovier. Volume three of "The In-Kraut" series dusts off Dieter Zimmermann's trippy orchestral take on "Whole Lotta Love" and Katja Ebstein's sexed-up version of "A Hard Day's Night." No summer gathering is complete without a group listen to Georgees's campy - and oddly catchy - "Butterflies Never Cry." Bratwurst and go-go boots not included. - CHRISTOPHER MUTHER![]()
