Great candidates

Electing a president is thirsty work and Election Day is guaranteed to be long and stressful. Get through the night by tapping into a tradition that goes back to the Founding Fathers: Drink American-made beer while you keep tabs on election results.

As you're waiting for the polls to close on the East Coast, start with what the British call a session beer - a brew that's low enough in alcohol so you can have several over a session of drinking and still be able to keep track of how many Electoral College votes your guy has. Berkshire Brewing Co.'s Steel Rail Extra Pale Ale, Long Trail Ale, and Allagash White, all around 5 percent alcohol by volume, are good choices early in the evening.

As the states on the electoral map start turning blue or red, the clock creeps toward 11 p.m. in our region. While you wait for the polls to close on the West Coast, you're going to need something to keep you and your palate awake. Give that job to some big West Coast American IPAs like Bear Republic Racer 5 or Anderson Valley Hop Ottin', both from California (though if you want to stick to the East Coast, you can't go wrong with Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA from the Delaware brewery).

Once results are in, you're either going to need something to help you drown your sorrows or a sip to match your jubilant mood. If your man loses, dull the pain with Ruination from California's Stone Brewery or Ommegeddon from New York's Brewery Ommegang. If he wins, celebrate with Ale to the Chief from Avery Brewing in Colorado or pop the cork on a bottle of Victory Twelve from Victory Brewing in the swing state of Pennsylvania.
