As the autumn chill sets in, it’s time to dig out a cozy sweater and apple-picking pail for a trip to the orchard, where rosy-cheeked kids and ripened fruits abound. Those ominous summer showers and cool temps did bring one gift: one of the best apple crops in years. Whether you’re hunting for pie supplies, a treat for your teacher, or simply a fun fall day, catch the crop while it’s still here. Here is a sampling of what local orchards have to offer. When pricing orchards, remember that a peck (roughly 10 pounds) holds about 30 apples and a half bushel (roughly 20 pounds) holds about 50. Be sure to call ahead and ask what varieties are ready for picking.
