Serves 4

These lightly sweetened apple slices can accompany pork chops or roast chicken. Or spoon them into a bowl and add vanilla yogurt for a slimming dessert.

3 tablespoons butter
4 baking apples (see list), peeled, cored, and cut into thick slices
1 tablespoon sugar, or more to taste
1. In large nonstick skillet, melt the butter without letting it brown. Add the apples and cook over medium high heat, stirring often, for 5 minutes or until the apples soften.

2. Add the sugar and continue cooking, stirring often, for 3 minutes or until the apples begin to caramelize at the edges. Sheryl Julian Notes:
