Business wasn’t booming in 1990 when Harpoon Brewery CEO and cofounder Rich Doyle wanted to host at least one great Octoberfest before things got worse. Twenty years later, it’s the largest brewery in the state and the 12th largest brewer of craft beers in the United States. We’ll drink to that, and so can you, at this year’s Harpoon Octoberfest, where traditional oompah bands will entertain and you can enter the chicken dancing and German chocolate-cake eating contests. Oct. 2 from 5:30-11 p.m., Oct. 3 from 2-9 p.m. $20 (includes a beer ticket and souvenir cup). 21+. Harpoon Brewery, 306 Northern Ave., Boston. 888-427-7666. www.harpoonbrewery.com
