In addition to merlot, Blackstone’s Winemaker Select series includes cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot grigio, syrah, sauvignon blanc, riesling, and gewurtztraminer - all priced at around $10. The three reds we tasted were nicely balanced, noticeably less sweet and thick than other inexpensive California brand wines. The winemaker’s determination not to overreach means that each one is a good choice for pairing with food. Blackstone wines are distributed in Massachusetts by M.S. Walker Inc. (617-776-6700).

Blackstone California Merlot 2007 Spicy, dark red fruits aromas; nice mix of fruit and earthy flavors; some modest texture; good, fresh acidity.

Blackstone California Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Shows somewhat brighter, higher-toned fruit aromas and flavors than the merlot; moderate varietal character with some liveliness and textural edge.

Blackstone Winemaker Select Pinot 2008 Appropriately lighter hue; appealing, varietally true aromas; some lovely, sweet pinot fruit here with weight that seems just right. Our fave.
