The traditional break-the-fast menu at sundown after the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur on Saturday is often a dairy meal. By tradition, the food at the end of the fast day is a spread of smoked fish, lox, bagels, and often the popular hot cheese casserole dishes known as strata. Some cooks like to add pickled herring to the array of fish. You might say that the menu could be offered for brunch because it has a wake-up feeling. As welcome as it might be at the beginning of any weekend day, it’s more so at the end of this holiday.
