Review: Mayflower Thanksgiving Ale

mayflower thanksgiving 003.jpgHere's one more great beer for Thanksgiving. Not only does this one have "Thanksgiving" in its name, but it's made in Plymouth, home of the first Thanksgiving, in 1621. Mayflower Brewing Co.'s Thanksgiving Ale is an English old ale aged on American white oak, with an alcohol content around 8 percent. The aroma is heavy with malt, with strong caramel and vanilla notes, along with wood and alcohol. Dark ruby with a miniscule head, Thanksgiving Ale is well carbonated. Bitter but not hoppy, the beer is strong and a bit spicy, owing to the rye that is part of its malt profile. Mayflower's hearty Thanksgiving Ale would be an ideal accompaniment to the proteins, starches, and fats that make up a good part of a typical Thanksgiving meal. A 22-ounce bottle costs about $6.
