Peabody Essex Museum hosting an educational beer event
Contrary to popular belief, it's not just about drinking beer and having fun around here. I mean it's mostly about that, but sometimes it's about learning and stuff.
The Peabody Essex Museum is hosting an event that appeals to the history major in me. On Thurs., Aug. 16 the museum will host "A Pint with Mr. Nobody", an event spotlighting objects in the museum's renowned maritime and Asian export art collection areas connected to beer. You get to drink some beer as well (very good beer at that).
Each beer will be paired with an historical vessel. The vessel pictured, for example, is a porcelain "Figure of Mr. No-Body, late 17th century, Jingdezhen, China". Historian George Schwartz, a doctoral student at Boston University, holder of a master’s degree in historical archaeology, and a curator at the museum for 12 years, will give a lecture. Also speaking on what you'll be seeing and drinking will be former John Harvard’s, Buzzards Bay, Salem Beer Works, and Harpoon brewer Nate Heck. If you're any kind of a history and beer buff, this should be pretty fascinating.

-- Christoffel Blond (Bierbrouwerij Sint Christoffel, Netherlands) 6 percent ABV
Robust, hoppy pilsner with a fruity aroma and dry hoppy finish
-- Hitachino Nest Red Rice Ale (Kiuchi Brewery, Japan) 7 percent ABV
Complex sake-like flavors with sweet malt notes and strawberries in the nose and palate
-- Yorkshire Stingo (Samuel Smith’s Brewery, England) 9 percent ABV
Traditional strong ale featuring rich flavors of toffee, raisin, dried fruit, and caramel
-- Old Stock Ale (North Coast Brewing, California) 11.9 percent ABV
Smooth and Creamy, sweet caramel and toasted grain flavors run throughout
-- London Porter (Fullers, United Kingdom) 5.4 percent ABV
Strong hop balance with dark roasted malts producing chocolate and coffee flavors
You can make reservations for the event by calling 978-745-9500 ext. 3011 or by visiting pem.org/calendar. The event, which runs from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., costs $55 for museum members and $65 for non-members.
