Portland, Maine's D.L. Geary Brewing Co. is mourning the passing of a founder as it celebrates nearly 30 years in business. Karen Kay Geary, who along with former husband David (D.L.) founded the company in 1983, died Nov. 28 at the age of 68 after a long battle with cancer. The Geary's were pioneers in craft brewing in the United States and were among the first craft brewers in New England. Geary was the first female brewery owner in Maine. D.L. and daughter Kelly Geary still work at the brewery.
D.L. Geary was reflective about the anniversary of the brewery.
"I think that the key to our success comes down to two things: quality and consistency," says Geary.
When the Geary's began brewing, there were 10 craft breweries in the U.S. Today there are more than 2,300.
"When we started, we knew we were part of something very exciting, so I'm not totally surprised," he says of craft's growth.
The brewer says that the first beer he brewed and sold, Geary's Pale ale, is still his favorite.
