Review: Mayflower Thanksgiving Ale

We're entering a great season for beer. With fall and winter brews (and the occasional stray pumpkin beer) mingling on store shelves, your options are greater now than at almost any other time. One of those beers, Mayflower Thanksgiving Ale is a good beer to gather around the table with.

mayflowerthanksgiving.jpgPlymouth's Mayflower Brewing Company seems like a very appropriate purveyor of your Thanksgiving beer. From an oft-quoted passage in the diary of a passenger on the Mayflower, the pilgrims settled on Plymouth in part because. “We could not now take time for further search or consideration; our victuals being much spent, especially our beer.”

In tribute to those early settlers, Mayflower brews an English Strong Ale and ages it on toasted oak. The beer pours a dark chestnut into a tulip glass. Warm vanilla and rich caramel waft up from the nose.

This is a sipper of 8 percent alcohol by volume. A bit of rye malt is added to the brew for balance and a little spice, but the beer is mostly sweet. It's impossible to miss the toasted oak. The mouthfeel is expectedly thick; divide this up into several small glasses and serve as a complement to your turkey, sweet potatoes, and stuffing. Cheers, everyone.
