Starbuck, singular?

And on the other end of the coffee spectrum, the Wall Street Journal reports today that Starbucks is testing a $1, 8-ounce cup of coffee and free refills on some of its offerings. The tests are taking place in the Seattle area.

A buck is cheaper than a cup of coffee at McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts, reporter Janet Adamy points out.

The pressure's on -- things slowed for Starbucks last year, milk prices are up, McDonald's is introducing espresso drinks. (McMacchiato has a nice ring to it, don't you think?) But does Starbucks really want to appear cheaper than McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts? Downscaling feels like a backward solution for a chain that made its name on seeming upscale. Starbucks might be better off buying these for some of its major branches and getting back to its coffee geek roots.
