Brought to you by the number 8

Posted by Devra First April 8, 2008 05:07 PM

File under belated blogging, but when I wrote about shabu shabu a while back, I noticed that all of the restaurants have a lot of 8s in their phone numbers:

Kaze Shabu Shabu, 617-338-8283.

Little Q Hot Pot, 617-773-5888.

Shabu Shabu Toki, 617-254-8888.

Shabu Village, 617-566-0888.

Shabu-Zen, Allston, 617-782-8888.

Shabu-Zen, Chinatown, 617-292-8828.

They're not alone in their predilection for the number. There's Super 88, of course. And Jennifer 8. Lee. The Beijing Olympics start 8/8/08. The word for 8 in Mandarin, "ba," sounds like the word for wealth, "fa," so it's considered auspicious. Indeed: Wikipedia tells me that the phone number 8888-8888 sold for $270,723 US in Chengdu, China.
