For aspiring chefs

This is the Dickies 12 Pocket Deluxe Knife Bag, made by a Yak Pak, a licensee of Williamson-Dickie, manufacturers of workers' clothing. It retails for $40 and is sold at some culinary schools and other locations, including Bowery Kitchen Supply. It comes in several prints, but I like the idea that this striped version resembles the classic striped chef's pants.

I take a few knives and a couple other sharp tools wherever I go, so I eyed this bag with envy. My own system involves putting a cork at the tip of each knife, wrapping them in an old kitchen towel, rolling it up, and securing the towel with the rubber band that comes off a head of broccoli. The bundle isn't as attractive, but it does the job.

  1. Functional and stylish in a no-nonsense kind of way. I like it. I always like watching the chef-testants on Top Chef walk in with their knife bags. Sheryl, I miss the pics of what's in your fridge!
