Restaurant news x 2: Craigie Street Bistrot and Orinoco

Posted by Devra First April 28, 2008 07:21 PM

#1: Craigie Street Bistrot is moving. Chef Tony Maws et al. will be leaving their iconic digs outside Harvard Square and heading down Mass. Ave. to Central Square. Pending approval of the liquor license transfer, they'll take over the La Groceria location on Main Street, renovating it and putting in a snazzy kitchen. (Perhaps a bigger freezer is in order; the current location's is shown at left.) The bigger space will also have a full bar and bar menu; Maws will serve lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. The move is planned for early fall. I'm pretty sure I can hear the sobs of neighborhood regulars from here.

Burning question: What will the new place be called when it's no longer on Craigie Street? They're still deciding, so if you have any suggestions, post them here. EDIT: The new name looks to be Craigie on Main. (But if you have other ideas, you can still post them here!)

#2: The new Orinoco is open. It had a soft opening Saturday and starts regular service this week, with lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. The second location is at 22 Harvard St. in Brookline Village. Bigger than the South End Orinoco, it offers the same food. One innovation: a communal chef's table that will feature an independent menu on Saturday nights.

  1. So, what is happening to La Groceria? It's a great lunch spot.

  1. It's the end of an era for La Groceria, which has been around forever. Owner Frank Mastromauro Jr. will continue to run the property, but after 37 years at the restaurant, he's taking a break.
