The vegetable cooking rule
I was talking to one of the Food section contributors today about cooking vegetables and she wondered if there were rules about whether the water is boiling or not. There are.
The veg rules:
Things that grow over the ground get dropped into boiling salted water.
Things that grow under the ground are brought to a boil in salted water.
The only exception is new potatoes. They grow under the ground, but they're dropped into boiling salted water.
