My architect friend calls the high-style company whose catalogs we both get Design Not Within Reach. But they do have some practical items that won't dip into your trust fund. I particularly like this, not only for the fire-engine red color, but because there's often something in the kitchen too high to grab.
It's a step stool with a rubber bumper ($65). You've probably used them in a library. Casters under the skirt lock into place as soon as you step on it. It was designed 50 years ago, but DWR has made this version lighter out of plastic, rather than metal, and more dent resistant.
