Anyone who knew Julia Child knows that the information released recently was known to many.

Before she became the famous French Chef, Julia McWilliams Child, at age 32, lived in India in 1942 and worked for the OSS, for a man named William "Wild Bill" Donovan. The OSS evolved into the CIA.

Everyone knew that part of Julia's life. She often told stories of the makeshift parties she threw at the time. It was where she met her future husband, Paul. She called herself a file clerk. Later, they were both transferred to China.

She told her biographer that she had a staff of 10, coded information sent to agents, and took charge of a foot locker filled with opium for paying spies. Apparently everyone who worked for OSS was told never to say a word about what they did.

Not Julia. She loved a good story.

The Recipe Box Project:

If you want to contribute a recipe to The Recipe Box Project, please write it below. Also tell us where you got it (package box, cookbook, mom, friend -- include the name). We're looking for the kinds of dishes that people grew up on, that were served at family suppers, that tell a story, that are typically New England, or that you brought with you from a far away place to New England. We will print one of the recipes in the Food section once a month. To ask any questions, write to Debra Samuels, who is overseeing this project, at recipebox@globe.com. To discuss your recipes, click here.
