Consumers are up in arms over Nabisco discontinuing Royal Lunch Milk Crackers. "It's like discontinuing milk," wrote one Chowhounder. Others: "What will I put on my mac and cheese?" And how do you make stuffing without them?

Royal Lunch Crackers were best crushed slightly in a bowl of milk. You could be feeling very bad, very tired, very hungry, and that hit the spot.

Years ago, I did a four-part story on the wonderful owners of Gerry's Farm in Brockton. Mr. Gerry, the patriach of the family, ate a huge lunch -- he's up before daylight -- and after a long day in the fields, came home every day to a bowl of Royal Lunch and milk. That was all he ate before he went to bed. He will never go onto Chowhound to register how unhappy he is, but I'll bet he was the biggest consumer of the crackers in this area.

Nabisco, do you do any market research before you do something like this?

  1. Utterly depressing. Their decision to stop selling these biscuits must be due to lower margins on a product such as this compared to the other partially hydrogenated, high-fructose-filled crud they sell masquerading as cookies. Let's face it, they haven't changed the packaging since forever, or put any marketing behind it such as hiring twin brothers to disgustingly lick center of an Oreo in order to increase sales of the chalky black stuff.

    Sigh.

  1. Royal Lunch crackers and a cup of hot cocoa on Christmas Eve. That's what I miss. Of course we enjoyed them all year round, but Christmas Eve, well, that was the most magical meal.
I've even asked if they would provide a recipe so we could attempt making them at home. Not a chance.
Fools. If they aren't using the recipe anymore, why not share?

  1. We are very disappointed that they have discontinued Milk Crackers...
Another American icon bites the dust...
I am 70 years old and I remember as a boy having them after school...
I do not do the shopping and asked my wife one day... Sueleen you have not bought Milk Crackers in a long time... She said I have been looking for them and I was told the store does not carry them any more.

  1. My mom wanted to let me get a taste of the old country milk cracker. She is from Jamaica. Royal Lunch cracker was it! She has been searching for many months and just thought eventually she would find them. So i said let me go online to see if I can find them and guess what -- they are gone. :(

Nabisco should have given us some warning...I love them. How can we get them back!

  1. I am also very disappointed in the discontinuance of the Royal Lunch cracker.
My dad, 89, and the entire family have been eating them for years. There isn't a milk cracker that compares. Now Nabisco discontinued the Unieda cracker.
The company should try a marketing strategy prior to pulling them off the market entirely.

  1. I and my good friends all feel not just disappointment , but a little anger about the discontinuation of the Royal Lunch milk cracker. If it's a matter of cost, we'd pay more because they're that good. We MISS THEM. When you reach my age, it's good to have a cracker so delicious and at the same time so compatible with one's dietary requirements. Mom and Pops love them, Toddlers love them, even Teenagers love them, and I'm in my 80th year and I sure wish I could convince you to put them out on the market shelves again. What say you?

  1. The news about Royal lunch crackers being dropped is a sad commentary on the food industry and its con job of always putting the customer's desire's before corporate wealth.

  1. No one seems to have used RLMC the way my family did: Mashed into bowls of Manhattan clam chowder (usually Campbell's). I used so much in my soup that, at one point, a friend asked me: "Are you eating soup or making an adobe brick?"

The combination was wonderful, especially on cold, snowy days when sidewalks needed shoveling (back in the days before snowblowers, when I could make extra money, on top of doing my newspaper route).

  1. Very sorry to see these are discontinued. Haven't noticed them in quite a while, but wanted to have them while I was home this week recuperating from surgery. Known in our family as "Nana Crackers" they got us through many ailments over the years. Vermont Country Store should try to duplicate or find someone to make them - they could sell a tremendous amount I'm sure.

  1. For years I have been searching in my mind for the name of this cracker, and I would go up and down the cracker aisle looking for that purple box...to no avail. Finally I simply googled "cracker in a purple box from 1960's" and voila! Now that I know it is discontinued, I am sad....My mom always gave us a bowl of Campbell's Tomato Soup - made with milk to make it creamy - with tons of Royal Lunch Milk Crackers crumbled on top. Nothing tasted more delicious after playing in the snow for hours in our back yard and the woods behind our house. I just had a bowl of tomato soup just now...dreaming of these crackers that are full of such wonderful memories...big mistake to discontinue...what a shame...
