Circle in the South End is no more

Posted by Devra First December 3, 2008 05:01 PM

Opened in October, for sale in December.

Circle, the South End restaurant that took over the former Bob's Southern Bistro space, is closed. Would you like to purchase a 2,000-square-foot, full-service restaurant/lounge with a 2 a.m. liquor and entertainment license? It could be yours for $795,000. Here's the listing (you must accept their terms before you can view it).

You'll have to act fast. Atlantic Restaurant Group principal Daniel R. Newcomb says he's seeing a lot of action on the property already. "It was the wrong concept at the wrong time," he says -- upscale French in a spot that was beloved for jazz and soul food, opening in a bad economy. A casual concept might do better in the space, he says. His suggestion: an upscale burger joint. Sounds like a winner.

  1. Oh no! Not an upscale burger joint! Brings back the neighborhood's shudders for the initial "Night Town" idea that was tarted up to become "Circle."

Sorry for a restaurant to go under, and hopeful for whoever takes over this historic Lower Roxbury space.

ps: was "Circle" intended to be pronounced "Cir-Clay"?

  1. Sigh.

This place is in Roxbury, not the South End.

  1. The Globe draws the border between the South End and Roxbury at Ruggles Street, Melnea Cass, and Southampton Street. Wikipedia draws it at Columbus to the north and Lenox to the east. United Neighbors of Lower Roxbury defines its neighborhood's northern border as Tremont. All of these technically put the Bob's/Circle/TBA location in the South End, but whatever way you slice it, it's fair to say it's on the Roxbury border. That's part of what makes the property interesting. I would love to see something there that brings together South End and Roxbury. That was Bob's. Maybe something else can follow suit.

  1. That's a shame. The food was fabulous and the prices reasonable. I was looking forward to planning my holiday party there.

  1. That's too bad. The food was quite good, and they had a pretty impressive cocktail menu at decent prices. Although if that spot is destined to serve burgers, can we PLEASE get a reasonable replacement for Tim's? Nothing brings people together like a huge greasy grilled cheeseburger and some deep fried mushrooms (with mayonnaise).

  1. If you're going to put a burger joint in there, i'd rather see a 5 guys burger and fries than an upscale burger joint.
