The folks at Chowhound report that a second branch of the Portsmouth, N.H., institution is scheduled to open in April at 1 Kendall Square.

A little taste of the original Toast.

This is great news, because boy could we use more good breakfast places in these parts. Think of it: a rainy Sunday, head to the Friendly Toast for almond joy pancakes; spicy mashed potatoes topped with chorizo and fried eggs, served with toasted homemade bread; the Vegan Valhalla wrap (tortilla stuffed with sesame tofu, portobellos, brown rice, spinach, and tahini dressing) or the Mission Burrito; and maybe a chaser of sweet potato fries with brown sugar, Tabasco, and sour cream. Slurp mojito milkshake, various flavors of cocoa, or an alcoholic beverage. (Seacoast Online reports there will be a full bar.) Then roll out of the restaurant -- decorated with retro dinette sets, mannequins, '50s lamps, tacky wall art, and rubber cow heads -- and into a matinee.

As far as I'm concerned, that's a Sunday that can't happen soon enough.

Here's their menu.

  1. So delicious, get the egg in a hole on anadama bread. Its 6.95 and comes with hash browns, which are home made, ask for them extra done. Everything is home made and amazing.

  1. Wow, so many times my wife and I had contemplated making the 75 minute trip there just to have their great eggs benedict with spicy hollandaise. Now it'll be only 30 minutes away and much tougher to dismiss as a foolish endeavor.

  1. The Toast and its tofu substitutes will always have a special place in my heart - so happy to say goodbye to the hour car ride! Yay!

  1. My wife and I have made the drive just for breakfast a number of times. Somewhere around Amesbury you think, "This is stupid, why am I driving to another state to eat breakfast?"

Then you get your food and it all seems quite reasonable.

The big question is: Will it be open 24 hours? People would swarm there after the bars closed. It would be like the opening scene of "The Warriors" every night.

  1. I can't believe this is really happening! Oh how I swoon for Kate's Tofu Scramble and their delicious milkshakes!

Now we just need a Flatbread and trips to 'burbs won't be so necessary. I wonder if they'll be able to do all-nighters in MA like they do in NH (during the summer).

  1. Hurray Hurray, I live in Western MA now so I only get to Friendly Toast twice a year. Having it only 2 hours away will be wonderful. Friendly Toast is about great food, wonderful warm service and a great atmosphere. I can't wait to visit this spring!

  1. ugh so gross, i can't believe this place is expanding. where are they going to find more greasy and unshowered waiters and cooks? every meal looks like it has been dropped on the floor and scooped back up onto the plate. the only thing safe to get there is the beer cause it comes in bottles and hopefully the alcohol has killed off all of the germs.

  1. so awesome...i went to UNH and would go here all the time in Portsmouth. Now I happen to work on the 3rd floor of the building that it is opening in! Can't wait to get hammered after work or go for breakfast on sundays.

  1. the toast is incredible, plain and simple.

the servers, their appearance, and sometimes poor attitude is to be expected from the toast, that's not gonna change. remember, you're going there to eat. and this is not going to be your average run of the mill meal.
the fool above "matt d" could not possibly have been there more than once, i'd love to know what meal he got? and every meal? the jaspers (owners) are both chefs and so stringent in their standards they only allow the same 2 cooks to cook every meal, so can ensure it meets their high standard every time.

in fact, for the new location in cambridge they are sending one of these cooks down to live and work there permanently to ensure the same EXACT quality for the food and that all that work there are trained properly.

  1. Friendly Toast is one of my favorite places. I am not sure if Kendall Square will have the same magic as Portsmouth, but I guess if any place "south of the border" would be suitable for a Friendly Toast, that would be Kendall Square. Love the Guy Scramble! That has been one of my top dishes since about 1997.

  1. I went to UNH and was so happy when a trip to Portsmouth and the Friendly Toast was made...it now makes going up for Homecoming that much more of a treat! Can't wait to try the on in Kendall Square and hope that it's as good as the original.

  1. The toast is excellent!!!! I'm soo excited! I have been going there for years up in Portsmouth, and now that I live in Boston I haven't been making the trip, but now.... it's just minutes away! Yippie!!!!!

  1. I went there yesterday with 2 friends and was hugely disappointed.
Wait time to be seated (1h): Ok so the place is hype so you have to wait, I get it! But when I am told I would have to wait 30mins and actually have to wait 1h then I am really upset! Not only that, but people who arrived after us were seated before us.
Wait time for the food 2h: we waited 1h before our first inquiry; we called the waitress as the people who had been seated way after us had been served their food already. The waitress apologized but 1H LATER the food was not served yet! So we left.

  1. Terrible. Knew in advance there would be a wait - beautiful day to wait outside, no problem. Waited over one hour to receive food - order was wrong; pancakes were hard; salmon in egg dish tasted iffy. Would never recommend this place.

  1. I happened to visit the Friendly Toast while visiting Portsmouth and will never ever go back to that establishment as long as it is open. The service is absolutely terrible, our server visited our table once to get our orders, then promptly forgot about the table for 45 minutes before I had to flag them down and ask where the meal was. Upon asking why other tables that sat down after us had their meals and our table did not, I was promptly called several vulgar names and told to wait a bit more by our server.

The only reason you should go to this establishment is to pee on it. Even then the employers and employees might enjoy that as they seem quite content to be disgustingly dirty and hungover. While I can appreciate a nostalgic feel and actually did enjoy the eclectic day cor of the inside - the service and lack of any management whatsoever to control the horrific service staff makes this breakfast place an absolute zero.

Do yourself and favor and go some where else - do not visit this place.

The Recipe Box Project:

If you want to contribute a recipe to The Recipe Box Project, please write it below. Also tell us where you got it (package box, cookbook, mom, friend -- include the name). We're looking for the kinds of dishes that people grew up on, that were served at family suppers, that tell a story, that are typically New England, or that you brought with you from a far away place to New England. We will print one of the recipes in the Food section once a month. To ask any questions, write to Debra Samuels, who is overseeing this project, at recipebox@globe.com.
