I love buttercream frosting, but it has to be real buttercream, not one of those things made with some butter and some solid vegetable shortening. I taste them and think, "Crisco!"

Last weekend at a birthday celebration, someone brought a simple black and white cake from Lilly's Cafe & French Bakery on Arlington Street in Watertown (like the one pictured above). The gentleman who ordered the cake wanted whipped cream on the frosting because his family has a tradition of cream-only cakes. He called around and Lilly's was happy to oblige.

It was so light that the birthday girl and I each had two pieces. "Lose-It!, I'm ignoring you tonight," I heard her say. It was just what I was thinking.

The Recipe Box Project:

If you want to contribute a recipe to The Recipe Box Project, please write it below. Also tell us where you got it (package box, cookbook, mom, friend -- include the name). We're looking for the kinds of dishes that people grew up on, that were served at family suppers, that tell a story, that are typically New England, or that you brought with you from a far away place to New England. We will print one of the recipes in the Food section once a month. To ask any questions, write to Debra Samuels, who is overseeing this project, at recipebox@globe.com. To discuss your recipes, click here.
