He's doing what I (and many others) want to do

This is freelance photographer Erik Jacobs, who takes lots of shots that appear in the Food section. He's talented and he's a sweetie. Here's something he shot recently at Clear Flour Bread in Brookline, for a story on white bread.

In October, Erik is going off to do something he and his wife, Dina Rudick, a Globe staff photographer, are very excited about: He's starting an apprenticeship at The Farm School in Athol, a year-long program in which you farm, learn forestry and animal husbandry, build, repair equipment, and do everything on a small scale that you would have to do on a large scale if you owned your own land (which Erik and Dina eventually want to do). Devra First went twice and wrote about the program.

I went years ago, when Chris Kurth first started the apprenticeship, before he married Ana Sortun, and before he began his own Siena Farms.

Erik will be blogging about Farm School at ploughandstarsproject.com and probably taking pictures. We'll miss his photos in the Food section, but he's going off to do something difficult and admirable. We'll keep you posted.
