The food staff's favorite things of 2009
CANAL HOUSE COOKING
Gourmet magazine closed this year and cookbook publishers are fussier than ever. Yet two graphic designers, food stylists, and photographers in a studio in New Jersey, who regularly work for top cookbook authors, decided to self-publish their own books. Christopher Hirsheimer (shes a she) and Melissa Hamilton are brilliant. Their Canal House Cooking volumes are for home cooks and boast beautiful photography, sometimes showing gritty-from-the-oven pots. Their food is incredibly appealing: lamb shoulder chops in red wine, mushroom ragout on polenta, the buttery shortbread called galette Bretonne. No ads and no worries if something spills on the pages; it will add patina. Single copies $19.95, three seasonal books $49.95. Canal House Cooking, www.thecanalhouse.com or www.amazon.com
