CANAL HOUSE COOKING
Gourmet magazine closed this year and cookbook publishers are fussier than ever. Yet two graphic designers, food stylists, and photographers in a studio in New Jersey, who regularly work for top cookbook authors, decided to self-publish their own books. Christopher Hirsheimer (she’s a she) and Melissa Hamilton are brilliant. Their Canal House Cooking volumes are for home cooks and boast beautiful photography, sometimes showing gritty-from-the-oven pots. Their food is incredibly appealing: lamb shoulder chops in red wine, mushroom ragout on polenta, the buttery shortbread called galette Bretonne. No ads and no worries if something spills on the pages; it will add patina. Single copies $19.95, three seasonal books $49.95. Canal House Cooking, www.thecanalhouse.com or www.amazon.com
