The food staff's favorite things of 2009
BROCCOLINI
Broccoli is often tasteless, so I have always left broccolini to languish under the spray mister. My loss. Invented in 1993 by Japan’s Sakata Seed (and disastrously marketed as ‘‘Aspabroc’’) it’s a hybrid of the Chinese green kai-lan and broccoli. The pleasantly bitter flavor suggests broccoli rabe and dandelion greens. Saute with garlic and slice over pasta.
