Quality [budget] sparklers are closer than you'd think.
Today "California is producing some of the best sparkling wine in the world," said Zraly. "Houses like Louis Roederer, who produces Cristal, own vineyards on the West Coast. The Roederer Estate is a California wine producer but it's a French house."
"Also vineyards found by the Finger Lakes in New York State produce some of the best sparkling wine in the country," he continued. That area "has the same climate as Champagne [France], so the acidity comes out. And a sparkling wine from Gruet in New Mexico -- also [linked to] a French champagne house."
