A solar farm could begin sprouting on about half of the Pine Street landfill as early as this fall. Town Manager Bill Friel said negotiations are moving along well on a long-term lease and power purchase agreement with Virgo Energy of California and Southern Sky Renewable Energy for the town-owned capped landfill.
The operation could yield between $250,000 to $450,000 in revenue a year in direct revenue, or reduction in energy bills or energy credits for the town for the next 20 years.
Friel said the series of solar panels will cover between 15 to 20 acres of the 41-acre site, and that the leaf and yard waste composting operation at the landfill will continue. He said he expects negotiations with the companies to be completed by the end of the summer and construction to begin soon afterward.
