Look beyond the urban bustle. Within Boston's ponds, grasses, and treetops lie some of the state's dwindling species.

Common tern
The common tern is a species of special concern in Massachusetts and was last recorded in Boston in 2004. Scientists believe there were hundreds of thousands of terns in the state before 1870.
