Use fireplace inserts
If you have an older fireplace, you could be losing more money than you realize. Since many older fireplaces have open hearths that produce slightly more warm air than they consume, most of them are only 5 to 10 percent efficient. By using a fireplace insert -- often made from steel plates, cast iron and glass -- homeowners can make their fireplace airtight, attractive and more efficient.
