Good news for Mass. economy on solar

Posted by David Beard, Boston.com Staff April 7, 2008 11:33 AM

For those hoping that the state becomes a hub of clean industry, the news today from Evergreen Solar Inc. was all good.

The Globe reported that the Marlborough maker of solar-power products is expected to announce that it will double the size of its manufacturing facility at the former Fort Devens in Harvard and add about 350 new jobs as part of its expansion. It is part of growth plan that would more than triple Evergreen's workforce from its current 300 workers to about 1,000.

The state recently attracted a wind blade research facility that will be built near the Tobin Bridge.

Also in today's Globe: a column by MIT President Susan Hockfield on her school's burgeoning green efforts, including work on lithium-ion batteries to revolutionize the electric car and materials to make solar energy as cheap and dependable as coal. There's also a profile of oceanographer and climate change scientist James McCarthy and a discussion of the question: Why is hydrogen seen as a more viable energy source that solar or wind power?
