No. 1 Polluter? It's China, not US
Not only did China pass the United States in carbon emissions in 2006-2007, its growth in C02 production, if unchecked, may dwarf the cuts that developed nations attempted to set in the Kyoto Protocol.
Those are findings by a group of University of California researchers, who said that previous studies had underestimated emissions from China. Read the BBC's report. The researchers said emissions will grow 11 percent from 2004 to 2010, more than double previous estimates.
The research conclusions will be published in the Journal of Environment Economics and Management.
The report comes on the eve of a speech by President Bush in which he is expected to announce a national goal for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Bush also says all nations, including China, should have a goal for this. The president's speech will come the same day he is meeting in the White House with Pope Benedict, who has urged greater action on the environment.]
