Not a carpool, a van pool!

Posted by David Beard, Boston.com Staff June 19, 2008 10:32 PM

Nearly 800 people take part in a state program that groups riders together with a van for the ride to and from Boston each weekday morning.

The Globe's Erin Ailworth wrote a lovely story today about one group, which calls itself ''the damn van family.'' The group of North Shore professionals makes the run to and from Newburyport with humor and a Dunkin' stop.

Here's the full story and a nice graphic. Both got me wondering about that solo commute I make.

Are you in a carpool now or thinking about joining one? Let us know how it's going, in the Comments section below.

  1. Sitting in traffic is a waste of all of our valuable resources. There will be 9 billion people by mid-century and if we continue to abuse the environment and use all of our resources, we will continue to suffer. It is time for our culture to make some sacrifices to shrink our carbon footprint and create a sustainable future. Ridesharing is the only way to address this horrifying scarcity and rising gas prices. Our infrastructures are not built to withstand the amount of abuse that our culture has created. Such companies as; VPSI (Vanpooling) and ZIPCar are perfect alternatives to get to where we need to go. You may even create relationships with people that can further your career by vanpooling.
