Protesters oppose Somerset coal gasification plant

The state may be a leader in pushing green energy, but coal is undeniably in our future.

And yesterday, dozens of youth activists in the region delivered a pile of coal to the state's Executive Office of Energy and the Environment to tell officials they don't want it to be.

NRGPOWERX
Somerset Power Plant (NRG Energy Inc.)

The protesters are angry that the state is allowing a Somerset power plant owned by NRG energy to use an experimental technology known as gasification that will capture pollutants - but not carbon dioxide, the key culprit in global warming. The plant had originally pledged to use a cleaner fuel.

"Not only does coal hurt the people near coal plants, and the people of the coal fields, but we will all feel the effects of climate change,'' said one of the protestors Dago Lamat.

The protest was organized in part by members of Mountain Justice, a national network of activists working for the abolition of mountaintop removal in Southern Appalachia. Some of the coal being burned in Somerset, the group says, comes from mountains in the southeast.

  1. "but not carbon dioxide, the key culprit in global warming" What the hell is wrong with you.... take a minute and think for yourself for God's sake. There is no such thing as Global Warming! It's hype, contrived by the idiots we have serving us in congress to foment the largest tax increase ever perpetrated on the citizens of this country or any other country for that matter.

  1. Fossil fuel's contribution to the carbon dioxide level is 1/1000,000 of the atmosphere. This amount of carbon dioxide cannot affect the temperature of the earth by anything more than thousandths of a degree over 100 years (immeasurable). True science proves that this amount is only capable of slowing down a narrow band of reflected radiation in limited amounts that cannot warm the earth. Human caused warming is a failed theory as proven by the models used to try and prove the theory that have been consistently wrong for twenty years.

    The protestors are ill advised.

  1. OK, so let's say that global warming is some kind of conspiracy. The environmentalists just want to rain on everyone's parade. That all the carbon dioxide we've dumped into the atmosphere has nothing to do with rising concentrations, that carbon dioxide levels have NOTHING do with global weather patterns. I'll be honest with you, I hope to god that the thousands of scientists who say global warming is a real threat are just playing a joke on us!

But even if that's the case, coal extraction is still poisoning communities where it is mined. Mountains are being blown up. The most diverse ecosystems in the United States are being permanently destroyed so that we can keep burning cheap coal. People's water is running black with heavy metals, causing kidney failure and all sorts of ailments. People are dying because of coal extraction.

Even if global warming is a lie, you can not deny that coal is dirty, that it's killing people. You think the kids at Marsh Fork Elementary in WV are worried about climate change? There more worried about the 2.8 billion gallons of toxic sludge uphill hundreds of feet from their school, just waiting for a big rain to wash them all away.

There's no way that we can go on burning coal. The people and mountains of Southern Appalachia should not be sacrificed so that you can leave your TV on to entertain your pets.

  1. To say that the Earth is not getter warmer is to ignore what is happening all around us. By our own records it is clear that the Earth is warmer than it was 100 years ago. However, the temperature would have to rise another 8 degrees to make it has warm as it was 1000 years ago. The Earth warms and cools in cycles for various reasons none of which are manmade. Every 20,000 or so years the earth leaves its normal axis spin and spins a fraction of a degree off. This calls the earth's mantle to flex causing extreme volcanic activity. Gases released from volcanic activity create ozone. Historically speaking we are in an extremely slow volcanic activity period. Stop reading the newspapers and watching the TV and get an education.

We should be more concerned about the toxic releases in both water and air that will cause healthcare problems to local residents and stop tilting at windmills. Yes pun intended.
